So today started off pretty stable. Just before bed last night, the docs came in and told me they were pretty sure fungus was growing on the cultures taken from his secretions in the breathing tube. We gave him an IV dose of fluconazole as an anti fungal. In rounds today they discussed doing a bronchoscopy bedside and CT scan to look at the lungs. Infectious Disease came by around lunch time and after reviewing his CT scan from the 25th and watching the gram negative rod cultures grow, they determine it was not fungal (thank goodness!) and that it's bacterial. So we cancelled our big plans and decided to just relax today. We are still waiting to find out the exact bacteria we are tackling and covering him with Vanco and Cefapime in the meantime. Please pray for these fevers to cease. Tonight he spiked another and his HR went as high as 195. They let us hang his IV Tylenol early and the nurse put ice packs on his groin area. His HR went down to the 170s quickly and the fever is finally under control. He just has no reserves for these fevers. He's still coughing secretion but nothing like yesterday so that's good.
He was up and we watched a few movies today. He had a few moments where he was emotional and I totally get it. He is being such a trooper. Ativan is working very well as needed and keeps him relaxed. He will ask for it every time he wants it or needs it. He is such a good boy! Tonight we pulled his Femoral central line in his leg so that has to feel better.
He has the best nurses with one on one care and he is so well cared for. He continues to hang in there.
Today was my last day with Carson, Kam and Logi. I drove them to the airport this afternoon and sent them back to Phoenix. I cried but I know it's what's best for everyone right now. Owen needs me to give him 150% . Carson needs to get back to work and bill need paid. Kam and Logi will have plenty of long summer days with his cousins. They will all be back to Palo Alto in no time. This is all temporary and we will get through it. One day at a time...

Owen is the strongest boy I know!! I don't know many adults that could handle being awake and on the vent! Andrea, is it possible for us to send Owen some cards via mail? If you could post the hospital address, I would love to send him a card!!
