No Extubation Yet

Today was a better day... a LONG day... but a good one.   Owen went 24 hours fever free, which is HUGE!  Tonight he is starting to get warm again but I'm going to embrace the past 24 hours.  In rounds today we talked about extubation.  When we sprint him or just turn down his support, he looks like he's working much harder.  His respiratory rate increases from 30-55 and his little nostrils start flaring.  The combination of heart failure and this darn Pneumonia is kicking is butt.  He just needs more time to heal up his lungs and we will try again tomorrow.  We also have to make him status 7 for the time being (inactive on the transplant list).  We can't give him all the immunosuppression meds that are required immediately post transplant with this nasty bacterial infection or it could be fatal.  We even lowered his cellcept to give him more white blood cells to help fight it now.  That in addition to his multiple antibiotics should do the trick.  Darn infection.

He isn't letting it take him down.  He was up all afternoon and even got some physical therapy in.  He loves when the doctors round bedside and he is involved in his care.  He sat up in bed and played Legos for a while this afternoon.  He also discovered that you can call the library anytime during the day and request just about any movie be delivered to your room.  He watched Astroboy this afternoon.  We have been reading an entire chapter book a day and he loves it.  We are absolutely going to get in plenty of summer reading to pass the time.  The days just seem to drag on.  We do a good job of keeping busy and passing the time.  It helps that Owen takes a long afternoon nap most days.  He always asks for his Ativan dose and smiles really big.  He must like the feeling.  We usually just use a little saline and pretend to give him Ativan and he goes right to sleep. ;)

Daddy was back at work today.  Kam and Logi went to hang with their cousins.  Logi went to Sodalicious and I'm sure drank his body weight in soda from stealing sips out of everyone's cups. It's nice to facetime and get videos throughout the day so it's kinda like we are there.  Trying not to dwell on the fact that we are apart and just hoping that we will be together again SOON.  :)
Please pray that the fevers will not rebound and that he will continue healing. That we can extubate soon and that he will be relisted. One step forward... two steps back.
