We picked up Owen's new foot orthotics on Thursday! Initially, he loved them and thought they were awesome! Then we put them in his shoes and he hated them. His foot straps into the ortho, and then it slides into his new shoes. He wouldn't walk and just said "Take them off please... they are itchy and sweaty!" Apparently, they are going to take some serious getting used to. The whole point of the orthotics is to raise his arch a bit and they offer a little more ankle support. They won't work if he refuses to stand in them though.
Any tricks or advice from seasoned SFO moms.. I'm all ears?
We went back to Stride Rite on Thursday evening, so Owen could try on different shoes. I thought maybe if we bought different shoes that he really wanted, he would wear them. The only shoes in the store that he had his eye on were these light up Darth Vader shoes! HE LOVES THEM! The problem? We tried a bunch of sizes and widths and those darn foot orthotics do not fit in these Vader shoes. Bummer.
He begged and begged for the Vader shoes, so I bought them in a 9 1/2, his real shoe size. I told him he has to wear these when we go anywhere. He pinky swore and we walked out of Stride Rite less a small fortune and we still have the foot orthotic issue.
The good news is that he has been wearing his new shoes anytime we leave the house. I know... isn't this "normal"? Owen is a boy after my own heart and would prefer to be barefoot 24/7. I only wear shoes when I absolutely have to and I wear flip flops 99% of the time. For Owen to wear his new shoes is huge progress. We will slowly work our way into the orthotics. Who knows.. maybe the Darth Vader shoes will solve his ankle rolling issues, he's walking so much better in them already!
We had another relaxing weekend. I bought all the fabric for Kamryn's Halloween costume and Carson spent time creating her armor yesterday. It is finally coming together.
Owen has changed his mind three times.. but Owen's latest, and final, costume went on sale for $8!!!! You'd better believe I called to get a price adjustment. He is SO ready for Halloween!
My kids were finally able to start the countdown calendar to Disney! We're really 47 days away, but Owen stuck Filmore and the Sarge on the wrong Mickey head.
On Saturday morning my kids were so excited to get more MICKEY MAIL!! This Big Give was courtesy of WDWMICKEY and they couldn't wait to open it! I made them pick up the family room before opening.. that will never get old.
There were cards for each of the kids. Owen had a handmade Winnie The Pooh card and Kamryn's was Tinkerbell. I love all the details that goes into each package. We are already planning on sending some cool stuff when it's our turn to give back.
Both kids got iTunes giftcards and Kamryn also got a Tinkerbell iPod touch case! She loves it so much and has already purchased a ton of music with her card. Owen is still trying to figure out which apps he wants to spend his "monies" on for his iPad.
Thank you wdwmickey! We love what you sent, it was awesome pixie dust for our weekend!
I had a million Halloween craft ideas that I want to work on, but I can't seem to find the time. I put up the few decorations that we have. We are trying to find a fun local pumpkin patch to go to next Sunday and Kamryn is dancing at the local Halloween festival on the 29th. I can't believe this month is half over.. eeek!!

They look like Sure Step Orthotics. Lily had some, and they were awesome for her! She actually outgrew her need for them in a few, short months. I mean, she still needed some support, which we were able to manage with kinesio tape and really good shoes. For Lily, Keens provide her with excellent arch support. They are expensive but way cheaper than orthotics. As for getting him to wear them....I have no thoughts. Lily just wore hers without a problem. You might be able to take the Stride Rites in to the orthotist, and they may be able to finagle a way to get the orthotic to fit inside. Sometimes they can do that, but they may have to take the inside apart a bit..... Good luck!!
Kamryn may have to get a pair too, so he thinks their cool.:)
Does he like reward system for wearing them? Take him to fun places only when he wears his "special super hero shoes?" Maybe thicker socks are needed. Once he breaks them in he won't notice as much. My niece wore them for a year,They were ugly back then, she suffered through it and it was well worth it.
I like Queen Mommie's idea about taking his favorite shoe to get the orthotic finagled in.
Your children are sooo beautiful and I truly looove reading all about them. Can't believe how big Owen is getting~wow! And OMGosh...Miss Kamryn is such a gorgeous young lady!
For the shoe debacle, here's a thought from a G'Ma...If finagling at the orthotics doesn't work. Explain to Owen that Darth doesn't wear his super power shoes all the time. Tell him Darth's super powers actually 're-charge' when he wears his special blue shoes, with the 'super-duper-powered' orthotic and he MUST wear them a certain amount of time before he can wear his magic shoes. Worth a try! :) Good luck and lotsa (((HUGS)))
You need to put your foot down (literally) and stop babying and spoiling him. Some things in life we have no choice over and he needs to know that he has to wear the orthotics! Geez stop letting him be the parent. Just because he's sick doesnt mean he should run the show. Treat him normally and set boundaries and rules for him. You and he will appreciate it later. And he will start surprising you with developmental leaps and bounds! Kids only progress as far as you push them. Lift your expectations and he WILL meet them!
Meant to add that sometimes parents know what's best for their kids. Kids need to learn to respect that.
Rebeccah...I pick my battles, but I will be the first to admit..I AM a sucker! My kids are so sweet and well behaved...I just like to find creative ways to parent. I don't want him to hate his shoes so I'm trying to make them fun to wear.
Great ideas everyone!!
Don't feel bad, Andrea. I am a sucker too when it comes to my kids! But, I have learned to get tougher when I need to be,especially when it comes to getting my two sick kids to achieve greater goals for themselves. Its hard for me not to spoil my two, especially when they have been through so much medically, but even a doctor told me I had to get tough and set limits. Hopefully you can be able to push Owen a little more and he will benefit from that structure and guidance. Sometimes we want to be our kids best friends and we don't realize that we are harming them or holding them back. Don't worry, you and Owen will be fine.
Not trying to start a tiff here, but I believe Andrea was just asking for advice on the shoes, not Parenting.
You can't force a child to do what makes them miserable. It's good that Owen has a mind of his own and Andrea has a big heart.
I am more concerned about the one's who don't take a child's feelings seriously and make them do things out of fear.
I bet Owen's wearing them on his own by the end of next week.
My daughter had those same type of braces for her low tone and rolling her ankles in. I couldn't get her to wear the braces but I too went to Stride rite and got her a good pair of shoes that had good heel support. Good shoes fixed her rolling ankles and I wouldn't be suprised if good shoes does the same thing. We too spend 99% of our time home and barefoot. As Owen grows and gets stronger I'm certain his issues with rolling his feet will improve. My daughter is 3 1/2 years old now and we just had our physical therapy eval and the therapist said her feet look great. Good since I refuse to bother with those braces :) Try not to worry too much. This is really small potatoes!
I bought two pair of great Stride Rites, so I'm hoping they will do the trick!!: ) Thanks everyone!
