There has been no puking, except for first thing this morning. There is major constipation despite my efforts of prune juice and/or Miralax. He is in so much pain every time he has a BM that he screams and becomes soaking wet with sweat. Any ideas??
Other than that, he prefers to not exert his energy butt-scooting around. He sits in one spot to play and that only lasts about 30 min before he is exhausted and wants held. He has spent the day cuddled up to my chest. Kamryn enticed him with her DS to stand up against the couch for 5 seconds... just long enough to take a picture.
This was the cranky, "you can't make me smile" face.

A SMILE?!?!

As I'm writing this, Owen is throwing balls down the hallway. Maybe this is a sign that Moody McMoody is on his way out of here. If only we could stop the constipation, puking, sweating, exhaustion.... Owen could feel like a real boy. I don't blame him at all. I can't imagine how icky all his meds make him feel, the constant frustration of feeling exhausted, tape stuck to his face with oxygen blowing up his nose, tubes going down his throat. I think I'd be a little more than Moody myself.

I'm guessing it's Owen's medications that are causing the constipation? Our 2 yr old doesn't take any meds but will get constipated b/c of having too much cheese or other 'clogging' types of foods. She loves the Gerber prune/apple juice and gets excited about drinking it--kinda crazy! I guess it's b/c she only gets juice every once in a great while. I tried a suppository once also. I wonder what the doctors have suggested....
Very sad that Owen had been so out of sorts--but I sure can understand considering all the things he has to endure on a daily basis. I continue to pray for his heart and a future transplant.
I've heard Karo syrup works for constipation, but I'm not sure how much or often. If you google it, items will come up.
when our son was constipated, he was much younger but we used suppositories or a rectal thermometer to loosen his bowels. But I don't think that's comfy so idk if Owen would appreciate it
Awww, this is such a hard age when they are not feeling well and can't say,"Mama I have a headache or tummy ache. All you have is your motherly intuition, but he most certainly needs lots o fluids, if he is clogged.Apple slices without the skin are good, the pectin is good for both constipation and diarrhea. Dipped in honey helps too. My mom always used milk of magnesia on us, but yucky tasting. :( Maybe A&D ointment or vaseline around his poor little burning bottom from the hard bricks ;)
Let us know how it all comes out! ;)
I am so proud of this little man standing on his own, even when he is under the weather.
Please get better fast sweetie pie.
Hi Andrea,
I don't want to get in the middle of something, but I think that if you haven't talked with your cardiologist or Stanford about Owens current symptoms, that you should. His body may be maxing out on what it can tolerate and he's showing it this way. Make sure he's peeing the normal amount for him...if it's still hot he may be getting dehydrated too. Anyway, I just couldn't not post because I'm concerned like you are.

I know with Owen's medical issues this might not be an option, but our pediatrican has us give our son miralax everyday (they can even have it twice daily) i've just titrated mine to where he is having regular bms. Doc said he could have the peds dose twice daily (the lower line in the cap) i did that to begin and have backed him down to that amount once daily. She said its not habit forming and we would gawk at the amounts that GI docs actually prescribe. So my personal theory on it is to make it where he can go regularly without the discomfort, and hopefully he'll outgrow the constipation issues (in our case)! Hope this helps!!!
Bless his heart! He is cute no matter the face he makes.. so adorable.. but I do hope he gets to feeling better soon. By the way, he looks so much older making those faces.
they make these glycerin suppositories and they WORK! If my son hasnt pooped in a few days, I give him a 1/2 and withint 20 mins he poops.
like these.

hope that helps!
To even be able to muster a smile with all that he has going on is a miracle in itself. I just love your little boy!!!!!!!
Are you able to try suppositories? We use Miralax around here but have had to use a suppository before also and they work well...the infant ones of course.
I have no suggestions about Owen's constipation because my only child will be 31 in Sept. However, I do hope he gets relief soon. The first few pictures once again broke my heart but I LOVED seeing the one of him smiling. I just want to jump through the monitor and hug him.

Poor little guy! I hope he starts to feel better adn goes back to sleep through the night soon!
As for the constipation, our ped suggested 1 teaspoon of mineral oil a day mixed in juice for our daughter.
Again, hope e feels better soon!
Owen...blowing you bubbles to laugh about! Something to have that wonderful face beam a smile. Maybe you would prefer prune juice to help you feel better. So glad you love to snuggle with your sweet, sweet sister.
And...way to stand and conquer the couch--whoo hoo, Owen!
When Triston was constipated I would use glycerin suppositories or baby fleets enemas. My pediatrician gave us Miralax, which works, but if he isn't eating well then it might night. I really liked the fleets, but I think that you should only use it one in 24 hour period. I would talk to your doctor though.

Ask your doc about these. We ended up getting them for Chris who had major constipation issues that affected his reflux and made him cranky and throw up. They work well.
Poor little man. I hope he's back to himself soon. Have you told cardio about the change? I would, even just so they document it. Thinking of you,

mom to Chris, age 2
CoA, BAV, ASD, VSD, sub-aortic stenosis
maybe apricots...those work for my daughter...
Poor Mr. O-
I know the doctors mentioned something at one time about the bowel folding in on itself. I think it is something they can check without doing the whole "old guy test"
Mia never had a bowel obstruciton, but with his little heart it may be possible.
So sorry about moody mcmoody... but those faces sure are CUTE!!
Oh Owen, you are a cutie pie, even when miserable! I love seeing his beautiful smile! I haven't had the "poopy" problems with Mary Clare thank goodness, but McCanless really gave me a hard time when she was a baby/toddler.
We tried Miralax, but I'm not big on medicine...well except for the necessary heart meds for MC that is... I, too, tried prunes, prune juice, glycerine suppositories and she was even on Nutramigen formula which is supposed to "run" right through babies (not the case for us, however)...what finally worked best was pear juice. Hard to find, but I usually found it with the baby food products in the baby isle. I swear by it, and they love to drink it. I still use it for them "as needed." Hope this helps sweet Owen.
We continue to pray for his health and your strength. I don't know how you do it, but you are one awesome mom. You know exactly what to do for him and I admire your "go get 'em" attitude and the fact that you are his biggest advocate. You are remarkable! Hang in there, I see big things from Mr. Owen!
Hoping you are staying cool! (It probably wouldn't be so bad here if it weren't for the AWFUL humidity! It makes 95 degree weather feel like 150 sticky, wet and thick air...I do, however, have the biggest, most beautiful ferns EVER.)
Love from SC, Kerri
As soon as we switched Carla from formula to milk she went through a constipation phase. My mother in law suggested putting Karo Syrup in her bottles and that has worked wonders. Whenever we don’t use the Karo Syrup she gets constipation again, so we just keep putting it in her bottles. We give her 8 ounces of milk and then pour about 3/4 of an ounce or an ounce of Western Family light corn syrup (same as Karo, but cheaper). Bonus: it makes the milk sweet AND adds quite a few more calories!
Funny thing is that when we were in the hospital they had never heard of this remedy for constipation. So, we had to get it approved while we were there...Women have been using it for probably as long as Karo syrup has been around. Doctors are funny -
I hope so much that Owen is feeling better and pooping soon!
What a divine smile!! Well worth the wait I am sure.
I hope you feel better Owen. I imagine there are a lot of places left un-butt-scooted for you to discover.
I am sorry he is still struggling. I pray that you will find the answer, quickly, for his sake and yours!
Oh Mr! I am moody too, and I dont even have an excuse! Hang in there buddy! We are rooting for you in UT
OMG the pouty face!!!!!!!
He really is adorable no matter what face he is pulling. I would use the Karo syrup thing, that is what we did for Cooper. Kylie just eats applesauce and that does the trick for her. Sorry about the no sleeping through the night thing. Makes things hard on you.
That must be so tough for him to go through, but what a beautiful smile in that one picture! At least you were able to capture that precious moment. Wonderful photo :)
I totaly agree i wouldnt be happy either
