Post Op Day 5

We had such a sleepless night. At around 11:00, our night nurse did his best to make the room a restful place. The room mate's family left around 11:30. The nurses said that's common for them.. they are not here all day, but they come in late at night. They're young.. such is life.

Owen maybe slept a total of 2 hours all night, off and on. The lights, constant sound of the Berlin Heart machine, and vitals kept him from resting.

Owen is so irritable today. Anyone that comes near him he says "go away.. leave me alone!" They ask if they can listen to him and he says "no! later." I think his cooperation for this stay has expired.

It looks like we will be here one more day. The only plan for today is to finish up discharge stuff. Ger rid of the pacer wires, get a discharge echo, change his dressing, and decrease his lasix just a bit. They came in this morning to poke him for labs and I turned all Mama Bear on them and said "NO WAY ARE YOU POKING MY BABY!" It turns out, they didn't need the labs anyway. Go me.

I spoke with the charge nurse today and requested another room since we will be staying another night. She was very understanding. We'll see what happens. I let the cardiologists on call know that if we can't get him moved, we need to be discharged this evening to the RMH.

Either way. It'll be good to give Owen another night to heal and REST!! He so desperately needs sleep and obviously, so do I!!

Poor Owen, and poor Mama too. Hopefully today you can get into a private room so both of you can rest.

Hospitals are bad places to try to get rest.

That is horrible! Rest is such an important part of healing and shared rooms must not have been designed by anyone with any medical knowledge. One of the cardiologists at St. Joe's told us that sleep deprivation is one of the highest forms of human torture. Add open heart surgery on to that and you have yourself one miserable little boy...and mom! I hope you guys make it out of there today. Owen is in our prayers.

I don't get the whole shared room thing. I FREAKED out when our "roommate" kept us up all night. It wasn't her fault, but how is my baby suppose to heal when he can't sleep. It is bad enough when they wake him up to do vitals all the time, but then when he gets woken up everytime they do them on his roommate.... CRAZY! I feel for you. I hope you get a private room- or get discharged so you can get some sleep. Good Luck.

If someone was thinking straight they would have given the little Berlin heart patient their own room Owen a quiet roommate. Sometimes I wonder about who they hire and why.
I hope you both get some good rest tonight, and a cat nap?

What a stressful night you both had. Really not ideal for healing and restful sleep. :-( They don't have many single rooms over here with the NHS, unless you have to be in isolation, so I can really sympathise - when Charlie had his Fontan I spent three weeks on a campbed in an open ward with nothing between us and everyone else except a curtain!! I came close to buying the nurses bedroom slippers to stop them clomping up and down the ward, six inches from my head!! I REALLY hope you can get a private room tonight so Owen (and you!) can get some decent sleep. And we're hoping hard that you'll be out of there asap and on your way home!! Go Owen - you're doing everybody proud!! Big hugs xxx

Wow! Now I really know how spoiled we were at Primary Children's in Salt Lake. We have NEVER shared a room with anyone on the floor...I don't think they even have shared rooms. I hope you get some rest tonight and good for you for putting your foot down about the labs this morning.

Sorry about your bad night... no fun at all. I can't believe how fast Owen is healing, GOD is SO GOOD! Sounds like you guys will be out of there in no time! Just think how great your cozy beds at home will feel in a few days! :) hang in there!

Ok honestly, even if the parents of the other babe are young and whatnot, WHO COMES TO VISIT FROM 9-1130PM?! I mean honestly it infuriates me and I don't even know you! Poor Owen (and you, and everyone else in a hospital) deserve rest. Unless those people work 2nd shift or something, there is no reason for that. On top of it, when there is a case like that of the parents and family visiting so late, they should not be rooming with anyone! Sheesh. I just don't get it. *sigh* Hang in there, you are one good mama :) *Megan from WI*

Oh your night last night sounds horrible. I am so sorry. We have never had to share on the floor, only in the ICU and that is a miserable experience. I can't even imagine it on the floor. I hope that your charge nurse follows through and that tonight is restful for everyone!
