I don't know why I insist on torturing myself. As if moving and searching for a house (more on that in a second) isn't enough, I decided to start Owen on a blended foods diet this week.
I spend at least an hour a day searching the MLS, private listing, property management sites, craigslist, you name it. All the houses are starting to look the same and I might just have to flip a coin and go with it. I am starting to pack up our home and it looks worse than when I started. Boxes with leftover space for something, piles to go to Goodwill, overflowing trashcans outside and I keep reminding myself that it will be over soon! HA.
Owen went to Cardiology today and his echo shows the same ol' stuff. Decreased function and super leaky Tricuspid Valve. His tricuspid valve is supposed to pump the blood from the Atrium to the Ventricle and then out to the body. Owen's valve is so leaky that it regurges the blood back from the Ventricle into the Atrium and his Right Atrium is super engorged. That blood obviously isn't going to the body like it should. Dumb ol' leaky valve.
The good news is that we can just keep watching him and see Dr Stock in about six weeks. Six weeks after that visit we'll head to Stanford again. I'm pretty sure I'll be needing a vacation by then!
The bad news...
Owen has still been puking on the Pediasure and Peptamin Jr wasn't any better. I spoke with Avery (Bela's Momma) and she has had Bela on a blended diet for about six month and has seen great results. We talked the other night and she gave me all the motivation I needed. It makes sense all of a sudden... why would his tummy feel good with Pediasure being pumped into him continuously when the main ingrediets are corn syrup and sugary goo?
Starting yesterday morning...
I started with yogurt, 1/2 banana, whole milk and lunch turned into almond butter, cottage cheese and apples, then came dinner of refried beans, avacado and a shot of olive oil. He had some other blended snacks in between and guess what?? Not one single puke!!!
It makes perfect sense to me now.
I was always scared to go against the GI doctor's advice, which was "we don't recommend blended formulas because it clogs the tube and there is no way to know how much fluid ounces, proteins, fats and calories you are giving him... why would you want to go through all that work when you can just pop open a can and all the nutrients are there for you?"
I am trying not to stress the details... I think of what a healthy toddler would eat on a day to day basis and throw it in the blender for him. Then I add lots of healthy fruits, veges, oils, grains and I realize that he's probably getting a more balanced diet than most kiddos his age that eat orally. In all honesty.. Kamryn survived on PB&J sandwiches, chicken nuggets, apples, bananas and french fries... look how great she turned out!!
I am still supplementing with formula when needed and I will have my Pediatrician send up an order for Compleat formula which contains real food rather than sugary goo.
I can already see a difference in Owen and it's only day 2! If anyone has information, recipes, advice.... please email me at andreanicolesimmons@hotmail.com. I know I had a post about this in October about wanting to start him on real foods, but the nutrionist at Stanford and GI here said "they recommended against it." At the time he wasn't gaining weight. Now he is up to 27lbs and my Mommy instincts are taking over.
Can you believe that Mister Owen will be TWO tomorrow?? I think I should probably take a day away from packing and house hunting to celebrate!!!

What an interesting change of events! Way to go trusting your mommy instincts. I sure hope that blended foods are the answer for you both...and if you have a great blender, I can't imagine that tube clogging would be any more common than it already is! Oh...and almost HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I can't wait to see what you do to celebrate...despite all of your other stress right now. Sheesh!
I think thats great you are giving him the blended foods, and really great that he hasn't puked either!!!
I can't believe he is almost two!
Love, Hugs and Prayers-

that is certainly a better diet than what my 2 year old eats! Today she had a bagel, a granola bar, and a piece of cheese. I hope he does well with this diet!
I am all for the mommy instincts. We actually saw a wonderful feeding therepst (you may remeber my post about the "g-tube whisperer"). She was great. At that same time Kaidence was puking 3 times a day or more. She suggested that we put food through her g-tube. We did, sometimes I blended it myself and other times I used baby food from the jar. However, most baby foods in the jar need to be blended and thinned a little. She did great. I also noticed an improvement. The only down side was that she figured out that we could just put her food in that instead of her having to work to swallow. Infact, one day I saw Kaidence trying to feed herself a licorice rope through the hole in her tube. Good Luck and way to go!!! Sometimes mamma's just know what is best for their kiddo.
So proud of you, Mama!
And what a coincidence, I just received a book about this called Cooking for Baby by Lisa Barnes.
I haven't tried any of the recipes but they look good.
Email me if you want me to send you some of them.
Lots of love and prayers,
Victoria
That is such great news. As much as these doctors read and see kids like ours, they do not usually live with them day in, day out. Trusting your self can be scary, but at this point you've been through so much you really do know best. Hooray for real food and yummy food combos that sound good even to me!
HAPPY BIG 2 OWEN!!!
you're right the blended diet makes a lot of sense...glad it's working out!
Happy birthday little mister!!!!!
Happy Birthday Owen!
SO, today is his birthday! Happy birthday little mister! Those "mommy instincts" and the inspiration are so much more important than the doctors who do everything by the book. Keep doing what you feel to be right. You are such a wonderful mom. Hang in there. This too shall pass!!!!
YaY! Mommy instincts should always override what your told you shouldn't do. And, Happy Happy Birthday today sweet Owen! Still praying for you all. God is good and he hears our prayers!

Go Mommy instincts!! I hope this continues to be a good thing for Owen's little tummy! He is in my prayers always, as well as you and your family!
HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY OWEN!!!
Way to go Mommy - sometimes our instincts are worth more than the doctors "advice". And your son is definately eating better balance than my two year old.
Take some time and celebrate! Your triumphs and his birthday!
Yeah for no more pukes!!! Ellie has been puking more and it is so frustrating. I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason. Mommy intincts are so strong so it looks like it is paying off to listen to them. Happy Birthday Mister Owen tomorrow!
Yay!! I think you are absolutely right! Who wants a tummy full of yucky ol formula when you can have the blended food diet you are giving him? I hope that he continues to do well. Happy Birthday to Owen! Good luck finding a home and getting packed. You never cease to amaze me :)

I really hope the blended diet keeps working for Owen. And yes, it is a lot better than what most kids his age are eating...BELIEVE ME!
