Operation Binky Fairy

Owen has finally decided to part ways with his beloved "nasty old binky".  For months he has thrown away one bink after another.  This one last green binky has survived, months of boiling, lots of chewing and the nipple finally broke off.

Owen decided it was time to say goodbye to his broken "B" and we decided we would give it to the Binky Fairy.  Last night, he put it under his pillow.  There were no tears, maybe just a few, as he said goodbye.  When it was time to fall asleep, he said "I need my... ", then caught himself and said "I don't need anything, I'm fine."

This morning he woke up and immedietly threw his pillow off his bed!  He was so excited to see that his "B" was gone and the Binky Fairy left him $9!  He thought that was a pretty fair trade.  There was no saddness today and he hasn't mentioned it, other than to tell everyone about the Binky Fairy.

The "monies" were burning a hole in his pocket, so we ran to Target this morning after taking Sis to school.  He bought some Captain America action figures and was happy to spend his earnings.
We have been trying to do this for months and he wasn't ready.  He would say, "maybe on Friday?"  Friday would come and go and he would back out.  He only used it to chew on in the evening time as he fell asleep, but he sure loved his "B".  We're proud of you buddy.. we knew you would ditch the "B" when you were ready and you did!

Congrats Owen! That's wonderful!

And I must comment that his colouring is looking really good in those photos! How are his sats lately? He just looks really good :)

Maybe he will breathe better now without that plugging his mouth. Will he need his teeth fixed now due to all that pacifier extended use? They look a bit pushed out on top. Good riddance Binky! Yay Owen!

Hurray for Owen! I'm glad he was able to give it up on his own!

Get ready in a few years for another set of braces. You would have thought you would have tried to prevent that but letting him have the binky this long just means he will have teeth problems

Awww, he's no longer a baby anymore. :) I think it was harder on me than my kids when that happened.

In fact, to be honest here, I still have a couple of their "dinkies" around but not where they can find them. Don't judge. :)

Teeth issues are the least of our worries. :) He has seen the dentist every six months since birth and they say he already has tons of trauma to his teeth due to intubation, so they were doomed. Baby teeth will fall out.

YAY for no bink!

so, I'm kinda surprised by the comments about his teeth- don't these people realize this kids got bigger worries in his life! I don't blame you one bit for letting him do it on his time, if the kid needed something to help comfort him after all he's been through, so be it! Your a great mom Andrea!

Been following for several years now but haven't ever commented! I am appalled that anyone would criticize the use of the "b" or even worry about his teeth! Come on people! This kid and his mom have been through it! If he needed the paci for a while longer so be it!! I think Owen is the coolest kid! And I think you are an excellent mom that knows best for Owen! Now that I'm a mom I am shocked and appalled that everyone seems to have an opinion on what other moms do! I think you are doing just fine, you know best for YOUR child! Look forward to a new post daily!

Awww sweet boy! And yikes on the comments about the teeth and the binky. Wow! Teeth are small potatoes on the whole spectrum of what Owen has to deal with. The binky was actually encouraged for a long time for Logan because it helped to keep his airway open. He had lots of airway issues and was very positional. There is nothing wrong with using the binky. For a child that has endured a lot of trauma in his life he needed that bit of comfort to help him get through all of that. {{{HUG}}}

Good job on kicking the bink to the curb Owen! Just in time for your Disney Trip!!!

YAY for Owen! And honestly, BOO for the comments about his teeth. You're dong an amazing job with Owen and as his mama, you know what's best in dealing with his various medical issues. And yes, I agree that his teeth are the least of his concerns - I'd say keeping him alive, stable and secure are a little closer to the top. ;-) Bodie still loves his binkies - I figure we'll let him ditch them when he's ready. These little miracles don't have much that IS in their control, so if they want to have this, so be it. Congrats!

Glad you deleted that nasty comment from "becky" It showed up in my email after she posted it. I can't believe how awful some people can be. Can you block her from reading you stuff? I'd hate to have someone like her criticize everything your doing.

Thanks for deleting that comment Andy. I have been stewing about it since I read it last night. These people obviously do not know Owen or how strong and mature he is for his age. Let Owen go at his own pace, in the long run he will have more confidence in himself and know that he did things because he wanted to do them. Not because someone else told him he should.

If you are blaming his poor teeth from damage due to intubations, I suggest you get another anesthesiologist. I am a pediatric anesthesiologist, and have never damaged any child's teeth during an intubation. We always ask about any loose teeth, prior to the surgery, because there is a possibility of them being knocked loose into the airway. Good luck!

The kid is lucky he didn't bite the tip off and swallow it. Pacifiers are to suck on, not chew. Once a baby has teeth, its time to do away with the pacifier.

Yay for Owen! He's just the cutest thing.
And boo to the busy-body, know-it-alls. Buzz off! What in the world makes people think they have the right?

So excited for you guys and your upcoming trip!
