Painful Day

Carson showed up at the hospital this morning and heard Owen screaming from the hallway. They were trying to get an IV as his other ones were shot. They had tried twice in his hand, four times in his head and finally got one in his wrist. Poor guy! When I got to the hospital after work, I was sure to let all the nurses and IV team know that they are not allowed to poke Owen in the head for an IV as they don't ever work and it's just cruel. As if that's not enough... they had to do a PICC line. This is an iv line that leads all the way to his heart. I made sure he was well drugged up and I watched the whole procedure... it was fascinating. For those of you that don't know...they first put a needle in the vein, then they use a numbing solution that feels like a bee sting (Owen didn't budge), then they thread a wire to open up the vein, then they cut with a razor blade thingy to open up the hole, then they thread a tube over the wire all the way through the vein to his heart, then they pull the wire out and presto...they've got a PICC line. The whole time, Owen just GLARED down Robert, the same IV man that pricked him six times earlier in the day. He's not on Owen's nice guy list. After this painful day... it turns out that the IV in his wrist has to go because they used the same arm for the PICC line... six pokes for nothing. Like I've said before... he's a tough little guy!!!

THAT'S SO SAD THAT THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH THAT.... I GUESS THAT WILL TOUGHEN HIM UP FOR THE ROAD AHEAD.

That makes me want to cry. I think getting IV's are the worst. I became quick to know who was the best and advocate that my child needed the best.

Keep hanging in there, Andrea. I love how proactive you are in this whole thing...keep those nursed on task! I know they are all doing their best, but I love how involved you are. Don't stop giving your opinion or telling them how you feel. You are still in charge!

Iv's are the worst. I am sorry they poked him so much. But now that he has the PICC they shouldn't have to do much more poking, right? Anyway, I love all of the pictures...he looks like such a sweet little guy!
